kde4 perfectly usable
I am now running a full KDE4 session, from a svn checkout from yesterday. That's 10+ days after the tagging of beta3, and at the current pace of bugfixing, this means a lot of improvements.

So what's it like? Here's the obligatory screenshot. You can see Okular annotating a .djvu file (of course it also works with .pdf files) and Marble, which is a bit like Google Earth except that it can be embedded in any KDE4 app, which opens endless possibilities. You can also see the Battery plasmoid, which reacts instantly when you plug/unplug your laptop, and the Pager plasmoid, which works just as in KDE3. KWin defaulted to using OpenGL for compositing, and it works great here. Slamming the mouse to the top-right corner triggers the very useful Present Windows effect.

For me it's all perfectly usable, so I'm staying under KDE4 full-time. Not only to help with beta-testing (I already filed this bug report), but really because it already is stable and complete enough for me to use as my main desktop. I'm still using some KDE3 apps in my KDE4 session, but that's not a problem at all -- though of course it would be nice to use only KDE4 apps eventually.

On another note, Eigen2 development has been very fast recently, but more on this later -- for now the top priority for us all should be to help as we can to get 4.0 in shape, and Eigen2 will only be used in KDE 4.1 and KOffice 2.1. So I try to compensate for my current non-contribution to the 4.0 effort by doing some beta-testing, bug-reporting, and encouraging you all to do so :)

I'm glad to see less and less of the placeholder icons, hats off to the oxygen team for some outstanding visuals. Kwin's compositing looks nice as well. I'll have to look into getting a fresh Gentoo install for KDE4 since its stabilizing so nicely

Glad to hear that, gotta try it out.

Btw, is this default KDE4 theme on your screenshot? I hope it will not ship in final :)

Do you use opengl for effects in kwin? I can run compiz (direct nvidia rendering) but if I enable desktop effects in KDE 4 kwin crashes: no composite extension.
It works with Xrender but it's so slow. Can you please post your xorg.conf? thanks.

Enable KWin compositing

Can you please briefly describe how I can enable compositing support for KWin? I was looking for an appropriate option in systemsettings but didn´t find one. I would like to test it in conjunction with some ATI cards powered by the r300 driver.

Right-click any windowframe and you'll get access to those settings, I don't know why it is not in the main settings module either. By the way, it seems you have about 50/50 getting it working from my experience and from what I read so far.

"Slamming the mouse to the top-right corner triggers the very useful Present Windows effect."

Please don't tell me this will be the default. It is VERY annoying when you accidentally trigger this effect (or any other effect like in Compiz). The top-right corner is the worst default because it is where this happens most easily... for the very simple reason that the window buttons are located in there.

PS. In Gnome this is not that big of a problem because of the top panel.

Umm, in KDE the panel can sit on the top of the screen. In fact it's a good place to have it if you are tall - it's at eye level meaning not so many neck problems. it should probably be there by default as it encourages correct ergonomics.

As with all things KDE, I'm sure their will be a setting to turn Present Windows on/off :)

Ummm, I'm talking about good *defaults* which quite frankly, KDE has never been good with.

hmm, bashing that way is so lame! Please identify yourself and come join KDE effort in setting *good defaults* instead.

I didn't mean to "bash". I'm sorry if it sounded like that. As far as I'm concerned I was only stating my opinion.

I've read many similar complaints in various forums so I'm not alone with my opinion. Good default settings is what I believe, one of the biggest reasons why many people (and distributions) prefer Gnome over KDE and why some people feel like KDE needs much tweaking before it's usable for them.

It is good that we have a lot of options for advanced users, but the defaults should be good enough for newbies to feel comfortable with.

Anyways, I believe the most fundamental issues are being addressed already, especially by the inclusion of the Dolphin file manager. I'm hoping there won't be many new ones...

PS. What is the best way/place to make suggestions for KDE4? I'm thinking it would be the KDE 4 Brainstorm forum.

Favicon

In every KDE4 screenshot I've seen, the website favicons look very ugly in the taskbar. This is because they're actually scaled 16x16 icons. I hope this will be fixed in the final release.

BTW, I find the value that the favicons (in the taskbar) bring to the usability very questionable. For example, the (visual) information that the icon gives about the contents of a window maybe misleading when you have many different websites open in a single browser window. IMHO, it would be much better if there would be only the standard Konqueror icon.

...or a standard Konqueror icon with a small 16x16 px favicon on top of it. ;)

I like this idea very much :) even though I'm still not sure whether the favicons bring any kind of value to usability. They also bring inconsistency because other apps don't change their icon like that.

no compositing for me

Hi there!
I'm struggling to enable kwin's new compositing features on my nVidia 6200. My best bet was to copy my working xorg.conf from another (debian sid using kde4 packages from experimental) install, but still I get "Compositing is not supported on your system". Could somebody please post their xorg.conf's relevant sections?

Best regards,

rufusD
